Modern window coverings can feature earthy color palettes, natural materials and bright whites. Search wood blinds, shutters, drapes and shades.

Modern vs. Contemporary

If you look up contemporary in a dictionary, you’ll find “modern, current” listed as a definition—which would seem to indicate that modern and contemporary are the same thing in terms of style.

But modernism dates back from the early to mid-twentieth century (i.e. 50s – 60s), while contemporary design gained popularity in the 70.

According to Elle Décor, “Contemporary is, by definition, what's happening in design at this very moment in time. This definition makes it more fluid and hard to pin down. Modern design, on the other hand, has a distinguishable aesthetic that emphasizes crisp lines, warm neutrals, and balance.” So how does this apply to window treatments?

Difference Between Modern and Contemporary

Modern window coverings can feature earthy color palettes, natural materials and bright whites. They can range from wood blinds and shutters to drapes and shades.

Wood blinds are timeless, bringing the beauty of the outdoors into your home. Because they blend with almost any décor, wood blinds have been popular for decades.

Modern window blinds such as  are crafted from real hardwood like basswood, oak or cherry. Faux wood shutters such as  are made from a unique Polysatin compound. When choosing between real or faux wood window treatments, think about the climate you live in, what room you’re working with and your personal design preference.

If your window is not a standard shape, Hunter Douglas offers a diverse range of specialty-shaped window treatments from arches to angles to accommodate almost any window.

Contemporary styling usually conveys a classic look featuring neutral palettes and clean lines. Contemporary blinds made of metals such as aluminum add a sleek and stylish silhouette to your room. A wide range of finishes, including mattes, metallics and soft, pearlescent hues allow you to accentuate and highlight any window in your contemporary home.

The Best of Both Worlds

While modern design is specific to a certain period in time, contemporary design changes with time. Why not be adventurous and create a distinctive look by blending the two?

While drapes were once thought to be outdated, they’re making a comeback as a classic modern or contemporary window treatment. Drapes accentuate a room by adding texture, depth and dimension. They’re a perfect modern window treatment for large windows and do a great job of controlling light gaps. Layer your windows with signature fabrics ranging from sophisticated silk blends and sheers to elegant velvets and jacquards.

Whether your design choice is modern or contemporary, the style you choose can transform the light in your home with a touch of elegance that defines the mood of your unique living space.
