The largest city in Michigan, Detroit, aka the Motor City, is the birthplace of Motown Records, founded by Berry Gordy in 1960.
 

In homage to both cars and music, you’ll find the Ford Piquette Plant Museum, where the Model T was born, as well as the Motown Museum, which celebrates the legacy of Motown and it chart-topping history.
 

Detroit is also filled with other cool places to visit, including the renowned Detroit Institute of Arts—home to works from Van Gogh, Degas, Rembrandt and Renoir. At the DBLAS MBAD African Bead Museum, check out the 18 outdoor installations as well as the extensive gallery collection. Or catch a film at the historic Redmond theater, which opened its doors in 1928 and has been in operation ever since.
 

While you’re museum-hopping, make sure to take in the variety of architectural styles that grace downtown, including Beaux Arts, Art Deco, midcentury modern and post-modern.
 

And when you’re ready to spend some time outdoors, head to Belle Isle State Park, which boasts a zoo, aquarium and conservatory. At 985 acres, you’ll have plenty of space to hike, bicycle, or just kick back—preferably with a Detroit Coney Dog in hand.
