Modernism Week: Mid-Century Design Gems Are Reimagined With Motorized Shades

From February 14–24, 2019, Hunter Douglas joined media partner Traditional Home Magazine at Modernism Week in Palm Springs, California, as the exclusive window coverings sponsor of the 10-day design celebration.

Every February, Modernism Week hosts designers, architects and mid-century modern enthusiasts for design panels, poolside parties and architectural tours of iconic modern homes. Modernism Week is also a charitable organization, providing scholarships in the fields of architecture and design, and supporting preservation organizations in California.

Featured designers found design inspiration in Palm Springs while incorporating modern style to meet today’s needs. Hunter Douglas motorized window treatments were featured throughout several of Modernism Week’s featured homes. The shades were also on view at the Christopher Kennedy Compound show house, which was elegantly reimagined by a roster of top designers including Michael Berman, Joe Lucas and Celerie Kemble. As each designer injected their unique aesthetic into the rooms, they opted to filter sunlight with the Hunter Douglas shades that best complemented the tone of their redesigned spaces.

Many signature Modernism Week homes boast floor-to-ceiling windows and doors that open up to expansive views of the San Jacinto Mountains. Designers balanced preserving spectacular views and filtering abundant California sunshine with Hunter Douglas shades. With the demand for smart home technology on the upswing, our innovative window treatments with PowerView® Automation were widely featured by designers.

Inside the Eichler Home, HGTV’s “Stay or Sell” hosts Brad and Heather Fox transformed their home with Silhouette® Window Shadings with PowerView Automation. These lifted to reveal a serene backyard pool setting, which played host to Modernism Week events. They were also installed in the hall, kitchen, dining room and bedrooms, coordinating with Luminette® Privacy Sheers on the sliding doors.

Designers also made a big statement by going vertical with their window treatments. Beautifully airy Luminette Privacy Sheers, with PowerView Automation, softened the bold yellows, teals and chartreuse interior design accents at the Green Gables featured home.

In the Christopher Kennedy Compound, glass doors created a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. In the living room, designer Joe Lucas used Luminette Privacy Sheers on the large expanse of doors that opened up to a backyard lounge and pool area; Michelle Boudreau fell in love with Luminette sheers for the door of her charming casita; and Celerie Kemble opted to use Duette® Honeycomb Shades at the glass doors of the dining space’s poolside entrance.
