Modern and Marvelous: Modernism Week from Past to Present

Once the hideaway for celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and Cary Grant, Palm Springs has always been a popular destination for those seeking sunshine, spa-like serenity and swanky modern design. Today the chic desert city is still Hollywood’s playground as well as a hotspot for timeless, iconic mid-century modern architecture and design.

Being a mecca of modern marvel, it’s only natural that Palm Springs serves as the location for an event dedicated to celebrating mid-century modern design. Once a year in February, Modernism Week hosts designers, architects and mid-century modern enthusiasts for an 11-day festival of design panels, poolside parties and tours of outstanding modern homes. (Modernism Week is also a charitable organization—providing scholarships in the fields of architecture and design as well as supporting preservation organizations in California.)

Sharing in the passion for modern design and its significance within the design industry, we are proud to have participated with Modernism Week in previous years and again in 2022.

Modernism Week 2022

Maison Bleue Moderne celebrates today’s modern technology while honoring its coveted mid-century design. Interior designer Michelle Boudreau revived the home by infusing bold blues and curated décor with the original architectural details—making Maison Bleue Moderne a vibrant oasis of signature Palm Springs style.

Balancing the dazzling pops of blue and sensational warmth of walnut wood, our Luminette® Privacy Sheers ground the space by transforming natural light into a gentle, filtered glow. In addition to adding a refined element of verticality, Luminette Privacy Sheers also serve as a connection point between the home’s iconic mid-century charm and reimagined interiors.

Modernism Week 2020

Inspired by the breathtaking views of sculptural mountains and the colors of stunning Palm Springs sunsets, Mesa Modern was designed around the beauty of nature. Interior designer Michelle Boudreau brought high style into this newly created estate by integrating one-of-kind elements and unexpected touches within each space.

Seamless indoor/outdoor living took center stage throughout the home by accentuating the coveted vista views. Our Silhouette® Window Shadings were installed because of their power to diffuse natural light and influence the mood of the home—a mood heightened by sophisticated colors and striking contrast. Mesa Modern was as much of a journey for the senses as it was a marvel of modern design.

Modernism Week 2019

Reimagined by top designers Joe Lucas, Michael Berman and Celerie Kemble, the Christopher Kennedy Compound from Modernism Week 2019 was a celebration of quintessential Palm Springs style. Glass doors throughout the home seamlessly blended the inside with the outdoor lounge and pool area, which could have passed as the scene of a Slim Aarons photograph.

Artfully layered with natural materials, tones and textures, the living room was fully dressed by designer Joe Lucas. Our Luminette Privacy Sheers brought a soft glow of light into the center of the home and also served as a dramatic backdrop for the primary bedroom designed by Michael Berman. In juxtaposition, Celerie Kemble adorned the dining room with cheerful and striking geometric elements, which were complemented by our Duette® Honeycomb Shades.

Modernism Week 2018

In 2018, we had the privilege of working with interior designer Marc Sanders, who designed the expansive Steel and Glass House built in 2012. Modeled after Donald Wexler’s iconic architecture, this modern-day classic post-and-beam home was praised for being the perfect illustration of modern, contemporary desert architecture.

Such significant and striking architecture required the right window treatments to both enhance the home with soft, diffused light as well as protect interiors from the intense desert sun. Silhouette ClearView® Shadings, installed throughout the home, were the perfect solution for protecting flooring and furnishings from harsh UV rays while maintaining views to the beautiful vista outside.
