Parker Bowie Larson is at the forefront of what’s trending in décor from her perch as the former style director at ELLE Decor. But when it comes to her new home — which she shares with her young family of five — Parker is all about the mix and creating an interior that makes her and her family happy. She shares her take on what she is excited for this season, why the kitchen is her entertaining hub, and which family customs she’ll be bringing along to the new house.

Q: Your home masters a balance of traditional with modern comfort. How do you blend a range of your favorite decorative styles?

For me, it’s all about the mix and creating interiors that make you happy. I love pairing antiques with more modern silhouettes to give a curated, collected feeling to the room. I think people often get hung up on having everything match or stay in the same genre, but I think your home should be a reflection of you. If a piece of furniture or lighting is well-designed, it doesn’t matter if it skews more traditional or modern, and if you have a good mix of color, pattern and texture it will all work out. And honestly, at the end of the day, your home should be about surrounding yourself with what makes you happy.

Q: You inherited some very distinct design features in this home – specifically wallcoverings. How did you blend that with new elements?

I love mixing traditional and modern in my décor, so when I inherited a beautiful, hand-painted Gracie wallpaper in my new home, it was important to me to have window treatments that did not hide the intricate design. The previous owners had left a beautiful, upholstered cornice complete with trim, but instead of going with curtains underneath as they previously had, I opted for Duette® Honeycomb Shades, which are typically used in more modern interiors. I matched the fabric for the shades to the cornice, and the linen silk that we chose completely transformed the shades to feeling more traditional and allowed them to fit seamlessly into the elegant design of the room. As a functional bonus, the honeycomb technology also helps keep that part of the house, which is from the early 1900s, well-insulated.

Q: With the holidays quickly approaching, which rooms are you most excited to host in this coming season?

Preparing and eating meals together is what makes the holidays so special, and I am excited to change up all of the table settings for the different occasions in our new dining room! I like to start planning my tablescape months in advance and I’m lucky that I am able to get a sneak peek of the newest offerings during the holiday previews and trade shows I attend over the summer and early fall. This year, I am especially excited about having a butler’s pantry, which allows me to display all of the linens and china I have collected over the years, making it easier to mix and match my table settings for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Previously, I had to keep my extra dinnerware in storage, and I think it’s so important to be able to see what you have — otherwise we all forget it’s there!

Q: How do you approach seasonal décor?

I always like to focus on seasonal flora and fauna when it comes to decorating, so pumpkins and squash for Halloween paired with dried out limelight hydrangeas from our garden, dahlias and mums for Thanksgiving and lots of greenery for Christmas.

Q: Does your family have any holiday traditions?

My favorite part of the holidays is the family meal, and I love everything about it, from cooking together, setting the table, eating and even cleaning up. Everyone pitches in, and one of our newest traditions is that we start the festivities off with a special holiday cocktail made by my husband, who started learning more about mixology during Covid.

Another tradition with our family is decorating the Christmas tree. My girls get so excited and love to help! We make cookies to eat while we decorate, and my husband and I like to open a nice bottle of Champagne. If it’s cold enough, a roaring fire is always a must.
