A Developer's Perspective on Alouette Light Louvers

Wendell Colson, vice president of research and development at Hunter Douglas, was a chief contributor on the development team for Alouette® Light Louvers.

Q: Why are Alouette Light Louvers unlike any other window fashion?

A: Alouette Light Louvers provide the directional control of blinds and shutters as well as a crystal-clear view through widely spaced louvers. At the same time, this product provides the light diffusing and softening properties of two layers of fabric —that is, like a honeycomb shade or Silhouette shading. Plus, Alouette Light Louvers practically eliminate traditional window covering hardware by providing a fully integrated look at the window. This product is unlike anything consumers have ever seen.

Q: Why is light diffusion so important to interior design?

A: In my opinion, light is the most important design element of a room. The more control we have over light, the better we can design with it. Diffusion bends the light coming into a space, causing it to scatter in multiple directions without shadows. In window treatments, the goal of diffusion is to mimic the soft, shadow-free effect of clouds. Because the light is diffused as it enters the room, you're better able to see the detail and structure of objects in a space rather than losing them in the harsh shadows that accompany bright daylight.
