It was an ambitiously altruistic project: build more than 400 houses from start to finish in just five days, providing shelter for more than 1,000 people. That was precisely the goal of Habitat for Humanity's 2006 "Home Builders Blitz," which ran from June 5-9, 2006, and was the single-largest event in the nonprofit organization's history. As a national partner for the project, Hunter Douglas, working with professional homebuilders across the U.S., donated custom window coverings for the privacy rooms of every home built.
Since 1992, Hunter Douglas has partnered with Habitat for Humanity, whose goal is to eliminate poverty housing worldwide by providing families with an opportunity to invest "sweat equity" into the building of their own homes, assisted by volunteers. Habitat is ranked the 18th largest home builder in the U.S. and the third largest private home builder, working in more than 1,700 locations across the country and completing on average more than 5,000 homes per year and nearly 20,000 homes per year outside the U.S.
To date over 20,000 owners of Habitat homes in the U.S. and Canada have Hunter Douglas window treatments, with the number of window coverings donated exceeding 100,000 units. In addition, Hunter Douglas employees and customers volunteer thousands of hours year-round with local Habitat affiliates nationwide.
"Habitat is committed to providing homes for those who have endured sub-standard housing, and we at Hunter Douglas are proud to have supported the Habitat commitment for almost 15 years and will continue to support it," said Jim Mathews, Vice President of Corporate Marketing for Hunter Douglas.
