Q:If I'm willing to consider all types of window treatments, which ones will work best on my sliding glass doors?

A:

I'd start by telling you to look at Skyline® Gliding Window Panels, one of our newest products, which effortlessly fit onto sliding glass doors as well as larger sized windows. It is a European inspired product made better for the U.S. market. It is available in fabrics that range from sheer to opaque. It also has some visually interesting textures. The panels are available in two widths, 11 1/2" and 17". They can be operated by a wand, cord, or remote control. Simply speaking, they are bella!

Then there are our popular Duette® honeycomb shades. They can fit on almost any window size, including the dreaded sliding glass door! Because of the ease of the lifting system and the light-weight fabrics, you can choose to put one Duette on the entire door or split it using a "two-on-one headrail" option, making each shade operate independently! I love that option because you could have one side up while walking in and out of your door and the other side down for privacy or sun-glare protection. It also sports a tight stack at the top of the door so no obstructions for those tall people!

There are also our vertically oriented Duette Vertiglide® honeycomb shades, which work beautifully on sliding glass doors. Like the horizontally oriented Duette honeycomb shades, this product is tailored and has a tight stack (approx. 6 1/2" ).

You could also consider Silhouette® window shadings. Like Duette honeycomb shades, you can put one on the whole door or split it up with a "two-on-one headrail." I have this product on my sliding glass doors in my formal dining room, leading out to my deck. I used the fabric Originale™ and then added fabric side panels tied back and a top treatment. I have to say it's beautiful! One of the best features is its small stack, because even on a sliding glass door Silhouette window shadings will disappear into the headrail.

Here's a different but stylish choice: Pirouette® window shadings. This is one of my favorite products! You can also use one shading or a two-on-one headrail option. With a great view-through, the product is perfect for doors where you want to preserve the view.

Shutters look great, too–like fine furniture for your windows. With styles like Bi-fold and By-pass, and the sizes of louvers ranging from 2 1/2", 3 1/2" and 4 1/2", there is something for everyone. And, oh!, with the beautiful finishes, they are sure to make a statement in your room! This truly custom look is one of my favorites for sliding glass doors. I speak personally since I have them and love them!

Finally, you could consider Luminette® Privacy Sheers. These vertically oriented sheers are perfect when you want a softer look. Available in one way or center draw. Unlike a drapery, you can tilt the soft vanes to manage the light. As with most Hunter Douglas products, Luminette Privacy Sheers are available in a wide range of fabrics and colors.

As you can see, you have many, many choices for your sliding glass door! Whether you choose a vertically or horizontally oriented product, you'll find that your dreaded sliding glass door is no longer dreaded. Dress that door with style!
