Seasonal Window Fashion Considerations

Whether you live in the north or south, there's simply less light to go around as we approach the winter solstice on December 21, the shortest day of the year. To make the most of the dwindling light, consider some of our suggestions below. They'll help to keep your home warm and bright even on the darkest of winter days—this season, and for many more to come.

Quality Light
As the great mathematician and physicist Sir Isaac Newton famously proved, natural light comes in a variety of colors, hues and intensities. To brighten your home with a soft, welcoming light, we recommend window fashions that provide light diffusion. Diffusion means that sunlight passes through two layers of translucent material before entering your room. The result is a softer light that fills a room with a warm glow rather than with a harsh glare. For a premium window covering that diffuses light, consider our Silhouette® window shadings, with the Signature S-Vane™, (shown at left) and Vignette® Modern Roman Shades, Duette® honeycomb shades, Luminette® Privacy Sheers and Alouette® LightLouvers. These window coverings can help project natural light into the corners of a room, even on an overcast day.

Color Your World
Red doors? Gold ceiling? Nothing enlivens a room more than color. Consider pairing boldly colored window coverings with more subdued wall colors, such as the red traditional shades shown at left with the room's softer greenish colors. Keep in mind that sunlight intensifies color and radiates that color into the rest of the room. Also radiating into the room: the shadows and light patterns created by the weight or texture of the window covering fabric and by multiple-paned windows. Virtually all Hunter Douglas window fashions come in a variety of colors. When you visit a Product Detail page within the Our Products section, just look for the "Material/Color Details" link for product-specific information.

Natural Inspirations
Natural fabrics, materials, textures and colors can add warmth and beauty to any room. Hunter Douglas offers a wide selection of window coverings constructed from natural materials, including Heritance® hardwood shutters, Country Woods® Genuine Woods (shown at left) and Provenance® woven wood shades.

Time Saving
Hunter Douglas window fashions are designed to require minimal care and cleaning, which means you can spend less time cleaning and more time enjoying family, friends and the world at large. Many of our fabrics are dust, soil and stain resistant, and our aluminum shades are treated with a proprietary dust-repellent coating.
